THE CORONA VIRUS IS NOW ON THE CAMINO

 Today 6 cases of the Virus have been reported in a small village, Fonfria, near O Cebreiro, with a further 35 in isolation. It is believed to have been bought to the village by a pilgrim, who has long gone, and possibly continued to spread the virus as he/she goes.  

I see lots of parallels with our tiny village of 30 people, which the Camino passes through with the majority of pilgrims still not wearing masks. We locals are all worried by this.

Yesterday it started raining, I was laying on my bed reading. Next thing I hear lots of voices downstairs in my private area. I looked out the window to see 6 people standing inside the ropes that go across the space with a sign saying private house, no entry. I couldn't believe it. When I asked them to go, a man argued with me, "but it is raining". I lost it I'm afraid, and told him I DON'T GIVE A F*** I told them this is my private home, there is a bar in 50 metres go there NOW.  The majority of those pilgrims in my private space did not have masks on. Pilgrims either don't get it, or don't care. WHEN YOU WEAR A MASK, YOU PROTECT ME; WHEN I WEAR A MASK I PROTECT YOU. Please show some respect for local people and protect them. You may be an asymptomatic carrier of the virus. The figure is now approximately 50%  of people who test positive are asymptomatic. 

Finally, it has been a bad day today. I was cleaning up the little lane beside my home, where I now sit outside, away from the Camino. I thought I had seen the worst behaviour of pilgrims, but unfortunately not. At the end of the lane is an old door (actually it is the entrance to the pig shed of my neighbour). Outside the door was a bloody, used, menstrual pad. Amazing. Such an insult to me, my neighbour and the Goddess who gave us women our fertility. How could any self respecting woman do that? I am still shocked by this. 

So pilgrims I will fall short of saying go home, BUT LIFT YOUR GAME. THINK ABOUT OTHERS AND WEAR A MASK. DEVELOP SOME HUMILITY AND LOOSE THE FALSE SENSE OF SELF ENTITLEMENT THAT YOU THINK BECAUSE YOU ARE DOING A PILGRIMAGE THAT IN SOME WAY YOU ARE SPECIAL. WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS. PLEASE SHOW YOUR HUMANITY BY CARING FOR OTHERS. 

Hoy se han notificado 6 casos del virus en un pequeño pueblo, Fonfría, cerca de O Cebreiro, y otros 35 en aislamiento. Se cree que fue comprado en el pueblo por un peregrino, que se fue hace mucho tiempo y posiblemente continuó propagando el virus a medida que avanza.

Veo muchos paralelismos con nuestro pequeño pueblo de 30 personas, por el que pasa el Camino y la mayoría de los peregrinos todavía no llevan máscaras. Todos los lugareños estamos preocupados por esto.

Ayer empezó a llover, estaba acostado en mi cama leyendo. Lo siguiente que escuché muchas voces abajo en mi área privada. Miré por la ventana para ver a 6 personas de pie dentro de las cuerdas que atraviesan el espacio con un letrero que dice casa privada, sin entrada. No lo podía creer. Cuando les pedí que se fueran, un hombre discutió conmigo, "pero está lloviendo". Me temo que lo perdí, y le dije que NO ME IMPORTA UNA F ***. Les dije que esta es mi casa privada, hay un bar en 50 metros. Ve allí AHORA. La mayoría de los peregrinos en mi espacio privado no llevaban máscaras. Los peregrinos no lo entienden o no les importa. CUANDO USTED UTILIZA UNA MÁSCARA, ME PROTEGE; CUANDO LLEVO UNA MÁSCARA TE PROTEGO. Por favor, muestre respeto por la población local y protéjala. Puede ser portador asintomático del virus. La cifra es ahora aproximadamente el 50% de las personas que dan positivo en la prueba son asintomáticas.

Finalmente, hoy ha sido un mal día. Estaba limpiando el pequeño camino al lado de mi casa, donde ahora me siento afuera, lejos del Camino. Pensé que había visto el peor comportamiento de los peregrinos, pero lamentablemente no. Al final del carril hay una puerta vieja (en realidad es la entrada al cobertizo de cerdos de mi vecino). Fuera de la puerta había una toalla sanitaria usada y ensangrentada. Asombroso. Qué insulto para mí, mi vecino y la Diosa que nos dio a las mujeres nuestra fertilidad. ¿Cómo podría hacer eso una mujer que se precie? Todavía estoy sorprendido por esto.

Así que, peregrinos, no llegaré a decirles que vayan a casa, PERO LEVANZAN SU JUEGO. PIENSA EN LOS DEMÁS Y UTILIZA UNA MÁSCARA. DESARROLLAR UN POCO DE HUMILDAD Y PERDER EL FALSO SENTIDO DE AUTORIDAD QUE PIENSAS PORQUE ESTÁS HACIENDO UNA PEREGRINACIÓN QUE DE ALGUNA MANERA ERES ESPECIAL. TODOS SOMOS SERES HUMANOS. POR FAVOR MUESTRE SU HUMANIDAD CUIDANDO A LOS DEMÁS.

 

I am making an experiment to see if I can influence pilgrims to be more responsible about the use of masks, which are compulsory in all public spaces in Galicia. 

So far, 24 hours of waching, shows only a very small increase in the number of pilgrims wearing masks as they walk through our village, our home.  I am disappointed. I thought pilgrims would be more responsible and think of others, but this does not seem to be the case

Estoy haciendo un experimento para ver si puedo influir en los peregrinos para que sean más responsables con el uso de las máscaras, que son obligatorias en todos los espacios públicos de Galicia.

Hasta ahora, 24 horas de vigilia, muestra solo un aumento muy pequeño en el número de peregrinos con máscaras mientras caminan por nuestro pueblo, nuestra casa. Estoy decepcionado. Pensé que los peregrinos serían más responsables y pensarían en los demás, pero no parece ser así.

I have spent my life trying not to look or act my age, but now in corona virus times I am forced to accept I am an older person and therefore vulnerable if I should contract the virus.

I still like my daily walks and sometimes for a short while on the Camino before I head off onto other paths.  Some thing I have observed is that pilgrims of course walk side by side chatting, BUT if you see someone approaching you please change to single file so you can maintain the safe distance - in Spain 1.5 metres.

Whenever possible it is best to walk on the left, this is also true when walking on the road as well, so you are facing oncoming cars. Please don't split up and have people on both sides and force cars to try to navigate between you. Or as often happens if you walk on the right side, a car must go around you onto the wrong side of the road and on windy narrow roads this is very dangerous,

In my small village the average age is over 70 so please be mindful to keep at a safe distance if you see others, and it would be great if you put on your mask as you enter the village.

If you enter a restaurant, for example in Portomarin, tables and chairs have been placed to maintain the legal safe distance between diners. So please don't move them so you can be in the shade.

Lastly it has been hot and there is a spot beside the bridge where you can access the river for a dip. As you cross the bridge, there is a path on the right hand side to the right. I wouldn't advise swallowing the water, but I swim in it and have had no problems.

Many people are afraid of you as potential virus carriers, that is the reality of virus life. The virus has not gone away. Remember when you wear a mask, you protect me; when I wear a mask I protect you. It is a mark of respect, and indicates care for the well being of others.

He pasado mi vida tratando de no parecer o actuar a mi edad, pero ahora, en los tiempos del virus corona, me veo obligado a aceptar que soy una persona mayor y, por lo tanto, vulnerable si contrajo el virus.

Todavía me gustan mis caminatas diarias y, a veces, por un corto tiempo en el Camino antes de salir a otros caminos. Algo que he observado es que los peregrinos, por supuesto, caminan lado a lado conversando, PERO si ves que alguien se acerca a ti, cambia a un solo archivo para que puedas mantener la distancia segura, en España a 1,5 metros.

Back from Aussie land

I have been visiting family and escaping the cold weather for seven weeks. The fires were not near me, but the air quality was terrible at times.
I am doing what I enjoy most, looking after pilgrims in winter, when there is little open between here and Sarria - 20kms away.
Also back to being sola and enjoying the freedom I have to say.  Taking time to plan some adventures and where to from here question.  So enjoy the table and what I give, 'cause who knows ....

He estado visitando a mi familia y escapando del clima frío durante siete semanas. Los incendios no estaban cerca de mí, pero la calidad del aire era terrible a veces.

Hago lo que más disfruto, cuidar a los peregrinos en invierno, cuando hay poco espacio abierto entre aquí y Sarria, a 20 km de distancia.

También de vuelta a estar sola y disfrutar de la libertad que tengo que decir. Tómese el tiempo para planear algunas aventuras y pregunta a dónde ir desde aquí. Así que disfruta la mesa y lo que doy, porque quién sabe ...
