Sorry I'm on holidays visiting family in Australia

Sorry pilgrims but I'm away at the moment catching up with family.
In Portomarin, many places are closed for winter, and the best place for a pilgrim menu of the day, or raciones is O'Mirador. The albergue downstairs is also open all year, as is Ultreia, which is a good option if you want to cook for yourself, as they have a fully equipped kitchen. You will find an albergue section - only 12 beds and also habitacions with a share bathroom are reasonably priced.
Enjoy your camino, carry some food, because many places will be closed, and I will reopen after Christmas.

New bar in Vilacha

Today Patrick (Italian) and Nicola (German) have opened their new bar. After a year of restoring the old building, they are offering cold beer, on tap, good coffee and lots of great food, including slices of freshly made pizzas, boccadillos, homemade cakes, burgers, and salads - all vegetarian. Also lots of other cold drinks. Seating outside in the courtyard or in the nice and cool interior. It's great to now have a bar in Vilacha, 4 kilometers before Portomarin.

Changes to the Camino

I have no understanding of why, but this year the route of the camino after Vilacha has been changed. The arrows will take you on the bitumen road shortly after the village, but after another half a kilometer, beside a vineyard, you will be offered a path. It looks OK, but after half a kilometer, it becomes very rocky, with a steep descent down to the Portomarin - Sarria road. It is a difficult path. If one stays on the road, another half a kilometer on, one is then offered another path, again on the right, this cuts a small corner, but after rain it is muddy. My advice is to stay on the road. But please exercise caution. The narrow road from Vilacha is winding, and pilgrims are walking in the middle of the road. To come around a corner in a car and come across pilgrims in the middle of the road, is an accident waiting to happen. Whichever, path you take, you will need to cross a fairly busy road, the Portomarin - Sarria road. Please exercise caution as there are no signs advising cars to be careful of pilgrims crossing.

I continue to enjoy my simple life in Vilacha, providing a place for pilgrims to rest and take refreshments for a donation. I must reiterate when I speak to you, I have no ulterior motive, all I offer is information about options, when I ask where people would like to stay in Portomarin, etc.

Spring is here, so the weather is a little warmer, but we are getting our fair share of rain. When it is wet I leave open the stable area downstairs for pilgrims to sit out of the rain. Please respect this space. I cannot provide a toilet as I have a very small fossa septica. I have had a few problems with people peeing on the floor. If this continues to happen I will close the house.

Pilgrims enrich my life and it is my wish to enrich their pilgrim experience as well. So enjoy the space I offer you, but - take only photos, leave only footprints (the motto of a good bushwalker).

Buen Camino - good walking

Felice fiestas a todos - happy celebrations/holidays to everyone. Casa Susana is open for drinks and snacks to pilgrims. It is raining hard today and windy, so I have decided I will open the door to the stable downstairs for pilgrims to sit out of the wind. It is an experiment. In the past pilgrims have entered and pissed on the floor - unbelievable! So one more try. PLEASE RESPECT THE SPACE I PROVIDE FOR YOU IS MY ONLY REQUEST.
Only  a few albergues are open at the moment in Portomarin. If you want to cook for yourself, Ultreia has a fully equipped kitchen. If you want to eat the menu of the day, or even raciones, O'Mirador is the only place open. They have an albergue under the bar/restaurant so if you want a one stop shop it's convenient and the food is good.
Most of the municipal albergues are open in Galicia all year, but you need to check ahead if you wish to stay in a private albergue on the way to Santiago as many have closed for winter.
Feliz Ano Nuevo - Happy New Year pilgrims.

Summer's Here

Hi pilgrims
The warm weather is here and I thought I'd give you some ideas for cooling off.
Beside the bridge crossing the Rio Mino as you enter Portomarin, on the right side is a path, a bit overgrown at the moment, and you can get down to the river and cool off. The water is fairly high, covering some of the steps and there are some trees to sit in the shade.
The other thing I really like Spain style, is cafe con leche, con hielo (pronounced yello). The coffee is made as usual and then you are given a glass with ice, and you tip the coffee into the glass with ice. Some places charge a little extra for the ice. As a bit of a coffee fiend, I get my nice strong coffee but cold. Great in hot weather.
At my pilgrim rest stop I am flat out keeping up the cold water as I just make up the ice in my small freezer/fridge, and have a smallish esky, so bare with me  pilgrims AND please respect the space I give you. Twice today I went downstairs to find empty water bottles all over the ground.
Some pilgrims are suspicious when I offer information about albergues or places to eat. I am only trying to be helpful, I do not get any incentives from anyone in Portomarin, I live here and like to help pilgrims that is all.
Good walking pilgrims.

Peregrinos Hi
Buenas peregrinos caminar.

Magic Moment

I am blessed with many special moments whereby I feel I connect with certain pilgrims. Yesterday was pretty special. I was upstairs in my house reading, when I heard this music which sounded like a trumpet playing. I went to my window above the pilgrim area and opened it to find a group of pilgrims and one of them playing, yes, the trumpet. When they saw me they were full of greetings and played some music for me. One man in Spanish explained it was like "Romero y Julietta". I rather wished my hair was longer, perhaps more like Rapunzel: they were all rather "guapo hombres". A magic moment, thanks guys. Pilgrims daily enrich my simple life here. Mucha contenta y Vilacha.

Mucha contenta y Vilacha.

Spirit of the Camino

I have had some interesting conversations with pilgrims lately about the "Spirit of the Camino". Is there such a thing? What does it mean? Does it mean different things to different people?
The conversations were about whether the Camino is getting so busy that we are at risk of losing the Spirit of the Camino.  I would be very interested to hear from pilgrims to get a broader perspective on this issue.
For me, I do not judge pilgrims and accept everyone's pilgrimage is different. (I have always felt that in many aspects of life, "different" is just different, not better or worse). People walk the Camino for many different reasons and benefit in many different ways. There are people walking the Camino for religious or spiritual reasons, but there are also others who are troubled, or feeling something missing in their lives, and they walk to try and discover a direction for their lives. For a time the Camino gives that direction, and reduces the need to make decisions. One only has to find "the way", a bed for the night and some food. The Camino has also become popularized by books and films about it, which has led to an incredible growth in Camino tourism.
So getting back to this thing called the Spirit of the Camino. Maybe it refers to the incredible opportunity for spiritual growth the pilgrimage provides. It will be very much an individual thing to what extent one is able to tap into this somewhat elusive inner "spirit" we all possess.
When I listen to pilgrims they tell me, time and again, that the best thing for them has been the feeling of companionship they have shared with people from many different countries. I think that for me also refers to the Spirit of the Camino: setting aside differences, walking along and being open to conversations with others, while sharing a common goal, getting to Santiago.
I get a lot of pleasure from my very small involvement in the journey of pilgrims, when they stop for a short time to rest at Casa Susana. Sometimes, not often, I feel a little saddened that I have met someone that I would like to have had more time with, or got to know better, the man from Iceland is a case in point. But I have come to value these short conversations - they enrich my simple life here in Vilacha and I am grateful.

I would appreciate if you have the time to share your ideas on this blog, about the Spirit of the Camino. Meanwhile, good walking.
